At DEF-ED, we believe in the transformative power of schools and school districts to embrace innovation, culture, and creativity. The current educational status quo has not adequately served our children. DEF-ED aims to revitalize the school experience by incorporating culturally-affirming engagement rooted in an appreciation and understanding of Hip Hop culture. We are committed to ensuring that all children receive a curriculum that centralizes their experiences and interests, rather than marginalizing or excluding them.
Who is André Benito Mountain?
Meet Andre Benito Mountain, an inspiring force in education and the visionary behind the Hip Hop Literacy Laboratory. Recognized as a 2024 Epic Educator by the Center for Model Schools, Andre is at the forefront of transforming how we think about teaching and learning. This year, he is set to captivate audiences as a presenter at both Georgia’s Governor’s Office of Student Achievement Leadership Summit and the SUNY Summer Institute in Old Westbury, NY.
Andre is the founder of the groundbreaking Hip Hop Literacy Laboratory, an innovative, experiential learning program designed for elementary students. This interactive approach immerses young learners in the rich world of Hip Hop lyrics, using creative writing and social justice themes to make learning engaging and relevant. Join us as we follow Andre’s journey to reshape education through the vibrant culture of Hip Hop!
DEF-ED & Critical Hip Hop Pedagogy
DEF-ED is dedicated to developing resources that empower teachers to engage students through authentic Critical Hip Hop Pedagogy (CHHP). CHHP is an educational approach that leverages hip-hop elements to help students explore the cultural, societal, and structural factors shaping youth identities, experiences, and aspirations. Unlike standard hip-hop pedagogy, CHHP:
- Examines the intersections of various forms of oppression.
- Challenges traditional theories, paradigms, and texts that explain the experiences of students from marginalized communities.
- Begins with the premise that hip-hop is a vital medium for representing these communities and analyzing socio-political issues.
By integrating CHHP, DEF-ED aims to create a more inclusive and reflective educational environment.
